Is it legal to use a video recorder in different EU countries?

The German automobile club ADAC points out that there is a real lack of legislation in the EU regulating the use of video recorders.

Experts indicate that video recorders can be safely used in the following countries - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, France, Spain, Netherlands, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Norway, Romania, Serbia, Great Britain, Hungary and Italy.

Norway, Netherlands – the use of video recorders is permitted only for personal purposes and only on the condition that the device does not distract the driver.

France – provided that the video recorder does not reduce visibility.

Hungary – recordings must be in low resolution and unnecessary data must be deleted within 5 days of recording. Recordings must not be accessible to third parties.

ADAC specialists advise against using a video recorder in countries such as Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.

In Austria, the situation is a bit more complicated. Although video recorders are not banned, the legislation does not directly authorize their use.

Where is the video recorder installed?

The video recorder is mounted on the dashboard of the car, or on the glass next to the mirror, and records the road ahead while driving. If it is a two-camera video recorder, the second camera is mounted at the back, at the top of the car's glass.
