Marantz Special Edition

Extensive and meticulous tuning by sound masters is what gives all Marantz products their exquisite sonic signature. No component leaves the hands of the Marantz Sound Masters until it has passed their rigorous testing. Only the best products, thoroughly tested, will make it to your home.
Marantz Special Editions are Marantz's way of celebrating the love of music that runs deep in the veins of Marantz sound engineers and masters, exhibited in the craftsmanship and mastery of those special components. Every now and then, sound engineers will recognize a product with potential that exceeds expectations and master it with extra and reckless attention to detail, component selection and listening sessions. The original PM-12 was created exclusively for the Japanese market and soon appeared in the European market as well. The sound engineers combined this with the achievements made in the development of the famous PM-KI Ruby, and thus the PM-12 Special Edition was born.

Extensive sound tuning

Extensive and meticulous tuning has long been the secret to great Marantz amplifiers. When it comes to the PM-12SE, the Marantz engineering team has drawn on all their experience and knowledge, both in designing the amplifier and in the long listening sessions involved in finalizing the sound. The Sound Masters team, based in Japan and Europe, did not stop working intensively until they were absolutely sure that they had achieved the quality worthy of the Marantz name.

Marantz HDAM Technology

Marantz has developed its own discrete circuits, called Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules, or HDAMs, to replace the chip-based amplifiers used elsewhere. Using discrete surface-mount components with short mirror-image left and right signal paths, HDAMs significantly outperform conventional integrated optical amplifiers in terms of crossover frequency and noise floor. The result is much more dynamic, precise and detailed. Over the years, Marantz has developed different HDAMs to meet the specific requirements of players and amplifiers. The PM-12SE uses the latest version of the high-performance SA3. Combined with an optimized circuit design layout and carefully selected components, the PM-12SE delivers exceptional sound quality and performance.

Marantz Musical Premium Phono EQ

With the introduction of the Marantz Musical Premium Phono EQ stage, Marantz has taken its ongoing commitment to vinyl to new heights. Designed to deliver optimum sound quality by simplifying the signal path - crucial given the delicate nature of phono signals - the Phono EQ stage in the PM-12SE amplifier can be used with both moving magnet and low-power moving coil cartridges thanks to the built-in MC head amplifier. The phono stage uses two-stage amplification, combining a Marantz HDAM with a JFET (field-effect transistor) in the input stage, providing high input impedance. This further simplifies the negative feedback effect and eliminates coupling capacitors, again reducing distortion and improving signal purity.

High Quality Volume Control

The newly developed electric volume control uses the latest volume control IC, providing better channel separation, dynamic range and distortion reduction while maintaining the performance of an analog volume control. The amplifier uses a new Marantz-developed electric volume control, providing high linearity and the best quality channel separation.

Feedback in the amplifier

The current feedback design is a well-known, original Marantz circuit technology, thoughtfully designed to meet the wide bandwidth and high-speed reproduction requirements of Super Audio High-Resolution Music. The impedance at the current feedback point is limited, creating very little phase shift. Marantz Current Feedback amplifiers reduce the need for phase compensation by minimizing negative feedback (NFB). This simplifies the signal path and ensures high bandwidth, excellent transient response and excellent audio transparency throughout the bandwidth. Unlike conventional voltage feedback topology, current feedback also makes the power amplifier insensitive to heavy speaker loads.

Amplifier power

Building on the design elements of the PM-10, the PM-12SE is designed to enhance the refinements, maintain the purest possible sound and maintain the power required to drive the most demanding speakers. The PM-12SE amplifier output stage allows for high power output, delivering 2x100W into an 8ohm load and easily handling high impedance speakers, thanks to the 2x200W power output into 4ohms. The amplifier module is directly connected to the PM-12SE rear panel board to maintain signal purity and sound stability.

Fully analog design

The PM-12SE's all-analog design contributes to its noise-reducing structure and clean build: many competitor designs today include digital-to-analog conversion or digital gain and volume control, but Marantz keeps things as clean and simple as possible thanks to its acclaimed analog design. It may seem like the amplifier has a DAC, but digital circuitry is inherently noisy (electrically speaking) and can interfere with the delicate analog signals passing through the amplifier. That's why Marantz chose to leave its Premium Series model without any digital-to-analog conversion, keeping its amplifiers as powerful as possible.
There is also a Power Amp input that passes the signal directly from the input section to the power stage, allowing the unit to function as a pure power amplifier.

Carefully selected components

Marantz has a strong reputation for selecting the best possible components for its Premium Series products. Marantz's alternative to "amplifier-on-a-chip" IC components, the HDAM, is a miniature amplifier module made entirely of discrete components. Marantz engineers selected and optimized the HDAM by listening to dedicated Marantz units in Europe and Japan. Extensive and meticulous tuning has long been the secret to the exceptional sound of Marantz amplifiers. During the development phase, every detail was carefully selected, tested and approved by Marantz audio engineers to ensure sonic perfection every time you listen to it.

Analog inputs and outputs

In addition to phono and CD analog inputs, the PM-12SE features two line-level inputs and two pairs of recorder input/output jacks, allowing you to connect multiple sources and recorders. Use the PM-12SE as a standalone stereo power amplifier or as a power amplifier via the direct power amplifier input. For example, use the front of your AV setup and run it through the PM-12SE's power amplifiers.

Headphone output

Using Marantz's proprietary HDAM discrete modules, the headphone circuit delivers excellent audio fidelity with a wide range of headphone types and impedances, including low-impedance headphones.

System remote control

Use the elegant remote control to control the PM-12SE, as well as the optional SA-12SE Super Audio CD player. The PM-12SE features remote control input and output jacks for additional remote control configuration.

Designed for use

Like the complementary SA-12SE Super Audio CD player, the PM-12SE integrated amplifier is built to the highest standards with a front panel made from thick, heavy non-magnetic aluminium to prevent interference. Thick, nickel-plated copper, independent input terminals for CD and Phono plus Marantz original high-quality/high-purity copper-plated speaker terminals ensure the best possible signal.

Over 60 years of audiophile experience

Founded in 1953, Marantz has a long and rich history of designing audio components that have been loved by music lovers and critical listeners around the world. Because music matters, the PM-12SE continues our long tradition of providing the best-in-class music and movie listening experience.
